Cat 5 cable available at radioshack.com ( cat.# 910-1603 ) which is Belden 1585A teflonI took a piece of what I thought was shielded CAT 5 network cable from my office store room and extracted the strands from it. I was a little surprised that it was only 6 strands as I rembered CAT 5 as being 4 twisted pairs. When someone reconfirmed to me that CAT 5 is indeed 8 strands I went back to check what kind of cable I had been using. What I have used is plain old telephone cable !! Mind you, proably the highest quality telephone wire you can find with aluminium foil shielding, silver plated copper drain wire and Teflon insulation for the outer sheath. However I can not swear that the strands themselves are teflon insulated, but the insulation is definitely not PVC.
I will be getting some proper Teflon CAT 5 for my XO rebuild !
