Depends , if the speakers are efficient , then loud is possible with little stress on the amp.
Soft Clipping protects speakers and guards against tweeter damage when someone at your party , in his dope/alcohol misted state , whacks your amp up to the volume pot limit.
If you arent overdriving the amp , I would suggest off - if you hear nasties when listening if off , then on ;)
