The secret of the gloss is NOT the underlying black , its the multiple layers of clear atop of that , the thicker the clear layer , the deeper the gloss.The black actually DOEST have to be as smmoth as a babys bum
There are a few ways of doing this , you can french polish or apply clear in multiple layers with waterpapartsanding tween coats or you can buy water clear resin and coat the panel with that .
There is a slight problem with piano gloss , if you use a very hard drying clear coat scratches are VERY visible and happen often(they can be polished out , however this gives a "wave"
There is another option , there are formicas that have a pretty good gloss finish , you could apply these as a sort of "veneer" - however cutting formica is not a task for the inexperienced. To do so one needs a fine toothed caride tipped blade running at serious RPMS
