For drilling sheet metal, it's hard to beat Unibits which are stepped drills which you can usually find at Home Depot, et al. The largest size drills holes from 1/4 up to 3/4 inch with little of the tearout associated with twist drills. Best used in a drill press and Lubricate 'em like Rodney suggested.
