Re: new house new listening room new problems

212.100.0.18

hi jim,

thanks for the reply,

more room details : there is on largish window + curtains behind the speakers, and to one side in both corners are two cupboard units, the top half of which each have glass doors.

you warn about not over doing things, seems like a good idea - i've got the impression that a good sounding room is balanced - not dead or an echoing cave.

do you think i should try and disperse the sound more as a first step ?

I am trying to sort the acoustics by choice of furniture initially, so I'll try and break up opposing surfaces on the two side walls between the speakers and the listening position - i have book cases holding cds/lps. also I currently have a single open framed chair - I'll probablly buy a sofa soon anyway which may change the absorption.

I was going to put some prints on the walls which I can hang in one of two ways, i could put them in glass frames (still very reflective ?) or have them in open hanging frames (less reflective ?) that weight the paper to hang down the wall.

when I clap it does appear that the ringing echo is high up - should I consider trying to break up and reflections near the ceiling ? i guess this would involve something extra to usual furniture though.

the only other thing i can describe is that the sound is a muddy and unfocussed - and seems to have some of the lower mid range sucked out. maybe this is partly an early reflection problem ?

I'll spend the week-end moving the bits of furniture around and see what happens.

cheers,

Gazza.
