In my ARC preamp, as a phono tube, the Tele steel pin 6dj8 is the best tube out of the 50 or so tubes of this type I have tried, other then the Amperex pinch waist 6922, which is now pretty much extinct. Better than it's more famous gold pin 6922 brother, better than any of the gold pin Amperex or Siemens or Mullards orPhillips special quality.
Clean and clear without becoming analytical, maybe a little thinner in the mids than an Amperex, but not dry. Great top end extension, tight clean bass. There's that word again, clean. It allows me to hear clearly into the music in all its details . Definitely not solid state sounding (God forbid), but not lush and tubey either.
I also love the steel pin Siemens 6dj8, and feel 6dj8s in general outperform the voltage uprated 6922 and 7308. If your gear can operate with them, which in most cases it can. I know this runs contrary to most tube lore, but that has been my experience. Sometimes less is more. Cheaper too! YMMV.
Enjoy the roll!
