Tube Power - I had no idea

OK, I'm new to tubes. All my life I have used various SS amps and receivers, ranging from 17 watts to over 100 watts. These were in combination with a variety of speaker types, some low, some high efficiency. While I never really played my systems very loud, it certainly was very capable of "call the cops" loud.

When my SS Marantz died, I took the plunge into tube amp and phono stage gear. My new tube amp is "only" 6.5 watts. I placed the order with some misgivings, since I was accustomed to much more power. - I thought.

This small 6.5 w power amp (MP 301) has vastly exceeded my expectations to drive my speakers. Granted, my main music system uses fairly efficient Altec ( about 96db + or - ) speakers. Then, I doubled the load by adding another pair of EV speakers. The little amp takes them both in stride, plenty loud at only about .2 on the dial.

Most recently, I added a third pair of speakers for outside. They are not very efficient, about 87db - nevertheless, the little engine that could is driving them all at high volumes with plenty of gas in the tank to spare.

I think this may illustrate how many folks, like myself, are ignorant about power requirements and use in hifi systems. This has been an education for me, my power addiction has been cured.

For me, the quality of the first few watts is vastly more important that the total high power. ;-)
