I've found that true surgistors as seen in the pic are nothing but trouble. A modern-day equivalent is the solid state NTC resistor or "inrush limiter". No moving parts or contacts to worry about. Mac has used them for eons in their MC series of amps. They're available from Digikey and other supply houses. The brand I've used is (was) Keystone, I believe GE just bought them out. For W5 the CL90 is about right.Some will say that inrush limiters like this don't sound good. If that's your opinion too, just build a simple time delay using 555 timer IC and relay that shorts it out after say 30 sec.
