Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Re: Tungsram ECC83 review

I bought a NOS quad of these for the Scott integrated I bought a couple months ago. Until this week I haven't started rolling them out to compare with others, but my impressions on living with them is in accord with Sigmund and Milos -- especially the bass extension and overall presence, though I think they probably lack the detail one can eek out of some others. They certainly are worth a try, not horribly expensive as some other NOS 12ax7 tubes (can you burp telefunken?), and I could live with them just fine except for this desire to play with other tubes.

The GE JG5751 blackplates I rolled into the phono stage has better detail and resolution and are improving overall after letting them burn for a day (they sounded really tinny at first blush)..but they don't have the extension of the Tungsrams. They ain't bad, either. Actually, the more I think about it, I might go insane if I listened to all the tubes Milos did....
