The crossover design is much tougher. Plus these days drivers have improved so that they have acceptable performance over a wider bandwidth. If you don't have a budget and can bi or tri-amp you can still improve upon a typical two way system. After all a two-way monitor with a powered sub is technically a bi-amped 3 way system.

There are plenty of 3/4 way speakers still out there but they are a much smaller portion of the market. If you have money though the sky is the limit. There are good arguements for both approaches and like many things in engineering it is all about picking with compromises your willing to make.
