Re: Spendor SP1/2 vs. Spendor BC-1: has anybody done comparisons?

24.128.254.157

Don't give up on this post. I just bought a pair of BC 1's and will be comparing them in my mind and later probably in the flesh to SP 1/2's. The BC 1's haven't really settled in yet and I want to wait until my new Blue Circle amps are here before I make any comparative judgments. I have the preliminary feel that the BC 1's are more magic and more identifiable - that is, less anonymous than the SP 1/2's. We all say we're after the perfectly transparent (to source) speaker and then we hear one with a personality all its own that seems to get us closer to the emotional aspect of music-making and we say, well maybe not. Clearly there is an issue here, based on the fact that no has yet been able to maximize both virtues: honesty and passion. There is a moral here!

I'll say that so far, I find the BC 1's midrange something you can eat with a fork: that's how real and present it is. Also, these speakers seem to image like bandits. There is a colour to them, but I'm not sure what it is, perhaps the product of a rolled off high end. I'll leave it at that until they've been here a few weeks, by which time I hope to have the BC amps here too.

I think this is a fascinating subject. I'm told that if the original drivers in the BC 1's (Celestion tweeters) were still available, the speaker might well still be in the line. That said, clearly the Spendor engineers saw themselves "improving" the speaker through its two subsequent iterations: SP 1 and now 1/2. If you're looking for an increasingly flat and transparent speaker that also maintains much of the general musicality and personality of the BC 1, you would probably take the quotes off "improving." If you find the original's magic worth whatever compromises are made to preserve it, you would leave them on.

Maybe I'll get a pair of SP 1/2's in this summer and we'll have a BC 1 - SP 1/2 party. Amherst, Massachusetts. Y'all come.
