I almost decided to go that route after hearing a friend's wonderful Quad 2905 system. I bought a pair myself and they sounded surprisingly good in my room, but they were never for keeping. Their "barn door" construction ruled them out, as I have great views beyond the speakers.
I auditioned at a showroom, the obvious alternative electrostatics, the Martin Logan 13A with its narrow, semi-transparent panel. Sadly they sounded decidedly poor in my room, despite the efforts of Anthem and the distributor's efforts.
The reason, I concluded - ML's need to be carefully placed in relation to the wall behind them. Unfortunately, my "wall" is floor-to-ceiling glazing on a curve, so 12 ft behind one speaker and 15 ft behind the other. MLs were sold (big loss and lesson learnt about necessity to home demo speakers) and I stuck with my great horn speakers - twice upgraded since then.
Still happy with horns, though in theory omnis are the ideal type in my room - but they lack the imaging ability of well set-up horns by a mile!
