To further investigate, remove the back plate again and measure the resistance of the fine wires leading to the panel. If it reads open, your tweeter is dead, probably from corrosion. Early Maggies used an uncoated aluminum wire, and they tend to corrode. You'll see whitish fungus looking growths on the wire. While they may have been OK when you auditioned them, they can get very brittle and may have broken on the way home, especially if you had the speaker back lying against on the transports' floor.
