Howdy-
Firstly, it sounds to me that what you are thinking of is called the 'surround'. In the KG4 it should be rubber or perhaps some sort of plastic, (it's been a while since I've seen them) so it should not deteriorate like foam surrounds do. It is possible that the surrounds split--perhaps the previous owner had them facing a window and the sun spent a lot of time baking the bottom woofers. Or perhaps they were exposed to extremes of heat and cold. I had a pair some years ago I got used, and one of the rear passive radiators was discolored from being in front of a west facing window.
As far as your repair, as long as it sounds good, who cares?
Last I heard, you could still get replacement woofers from Klipsch, but if memory serves, they were somewhere over $100 each. When I checked some years ago, they had NO replacement available for the rear passive radiator.
If you want replacements, or even more speakers you should keep an eye on Craigslist, eBay, Audiogon, and maybe the classifieds here in the Asylum. Also, the Klipsch website had a pretty active message board for owners and enthusiasts and probably still does. That would probably be your best bet.
If you really need to run four speakers, and want them to sound similar, you'd probably have to stay in the family. Look for KG2's, KG1.5's or perhaps some current Klipsch models.good luck
