Re: Radio Shack Nova 8B Speakers

I agree that the reputation of the Nova series of speakers was a bit more reserved than some of the competetion. They were pretty and they were Radios Shack's brand which meant that they had a bit of the "old man" reputation. Young college rockers listened to Black sabbath on JBL's. Their dad listened to Boston Pops on the Nova's that he got on sale at the shack.

But, make no mistake the Nova 8 is a very good speaker. It has a heavy cabinet with real walnut veneer. It has a nice heavy woofer and decent quality double midrange drivers and a rather plain paper cone tweeter. That is the weak point, the tweeter. If you upgrade those to a nice dome or something a little more efficient they will be an even better speaker!

I would also put new capacitors in the crossover. That should really wake up the high end even more. The only other inprovement I can think of would be the addition of some internal bracing. If you stiffen the box up....there will be less cabinet resonances. I say this also because I saw a pair of these that had been stored in a hot attic. The glue failed and the cabinet actually unfolded like a house of cards! Therefore I conclude that the bracing could do nothing but help.

I have had a few of the Nova series speakers and I think they are a nice series of speakers. Just a note - They sound especially good stacked or in fours and the cabinets look real nice with a couple of coats of tung oil! Good Luck! Franksta
