The distance the speaker is from your ears is most important for mid-range and treble.The further your ears are from the speakers, the larger percentage of room reflections you will hear, and those reflections include many (relatively) slow room resonances (they decay slower than other frequencies).
If you want "fast" sound, sit close to the speakers and keep the speakers away from corners/walls (where they would most strongly excite room resonances).
In large rooms people often sit quite far from speakers and hear mainly reflected sound.
