There is a good chance that the speaker surrounds are rotten or the tweeters are blown. Too bad you couldn't try them or at least look at the drivers before you picked them up.The last KLH garage-sale speakers that I bought had tweeters that needed some resoldering, after which the speakers still had a rather dull, rolled-off sound relative to what I'm used to. I gave them back to the thrift store as soon as I got something nicer for the third system!
