I'd start by replacing the electrolytic caps in the crossover, one at a time. Listen for a week or so after each change to make certain the sound is still to your liking. If you replace them all at once and it sounds like crap, which cap is the problem? Any good quality film/foil cap will be an acceptable replacement. Good candidates are Solen, Bennic, or Daytons at the affordable end. MusiCap, Hovland, or MIT at the higher end. Use at least 100V rated caps and parallel values to get equivalents to the originals. The values don't have to be exact anyway. All caps have tolerances of +/-10%, +/-5% so you have some fudge factor anyway. You should also inspect wiring for proper solder joints and bad insulation. Good quality gold-plated binding posts would be a good upgrade as well.
