I started down this road and then got sidetracked by other projects.
There are a wealth of small, powered, near field monitors from M-Audio, Wharfedale, Mackie, KRK, NHT, Dynaudio, ADAM, etc. Plan 'B' was to use a 47 Labs Gaincard (I don't think the Super T-amps have enough power) or a gainclone to drive NSM 5s, Role Kayaks, Gallo Dues, or small Spendors, ProAcs or Harbeths. A single driver like the Omega Mimi Me could be another option. Finally there is the realm of upper-end headphones and a very good headphone amp.
I'm in rural Maine so I didn't get much auditioning done. If you pursue this I hope you'll post your comments.
