Best small speaker ever made IMO

The 890C Bolero uses a 10" model 406 woofer, a 10" passive radiator and the "mystery horn" tweeter, crossover is at 2000hz.

The Bolero was carefully designed to be a small system with the tonality and midrange clarity of the big VOT based Altecs and with a reasonable semblance of the dynamics of the big speakers. The key was the unusual 10" 406 woofer. The driver uses a 3" voicecoil, cast frame and the motor of the model 414 12" prosound woofer. The paper cone has a dual profile being staright sided near the apex and then concave towards the edge. A most unusual and well built driver.

The Bolero combines the noted technicolor midrange of the big Altecs along with a clean and fairly well extended bass. The highs are very clean though not as extended as some speakers. I think the tonal balance is robust and realistic and clarity is excellent.

What the Bolero gives up compared to the big Altec systems is dynamics and output but the dynamics are superb for such a small speaker (to an Altec fan the Bolero is small).

I own Boleros and several sets of large VOT based Altecs---Model Nineteens, 605As and AS-21s. The Bolero is the only small speaker I really like. For whatever that's worth. ;-)
