I don't know if anyone did any crossover upgrades, but by the mid 90s, they were really getting pretty dated. Short of a really good crossover upgrade, you'd have to look to another company as it sounds like B&W has gone well away from the sound you like.PSB G-Design, NHT Threes, Revel M12s, used JMLab Micro Utopias, etc. Maybe something with a poly midrange, which tends to be a bit warmer/more forgiving than some of today's more "chic" cone materials. The new Ushers are supposed to be fantastic too, but haven't heard them. Totems. Dali.
