Re: Upgrade Polk Monitor 10's?

The 10b's were some of my favorite bang for the buck speakers ever. That was back when they made high end products and the quality of the components and resulting sound really showed. The drawback with the monitor 10 has always been it's size/shape. It's an ugly box. It's hard to place properly as it looks awkward on stands and is too short for the floor. It had a wonderfully neutral tone that was suitably rich.
To find a modern speaker with a similar character is gonna cost ya. The 10's weren't exactly cheap back then, so inflation makes it a little shocking to realize what a bargain they were. I think they have run their course at this point as even the rubber surrounds will begin to crack soon, if they have not already. There are still quite a few companies which offer good bang for the buck and the latest crop has better resolution than the old Polks. It's the warmth and scale that is going to cost. From what you have said about those two models being a "draw" and what is available currently at that level of construction, I would recommend that you add to your short list the PSB Stratus speakers and JM Lab Cobalt S speakers. Both have good tonal balance, response, and resolution. You also may have a PSB dealer nearby as you have a set already.
