for the 901 Series VI

This is my second set of Bose 901's. My 1st, the series IV, I purchased in 1979. I had them hooked up to the pioneer SX-1980. Me and my friends were floored by this setup! Only thing I did not care for was you really had to crank them up loud in order for the 901's to really come to life. Also, you cant play conventional speakers with the 901's due to the active equalizer.

I turned in my old 901's this year to the Bose Corp and got a new pair of the 901 Series VI for half price (thanks bose!). I picked up a McIntosh 4100 receiver on ebay. Sounds real nice. But I still wanted to have conventional speakers playing with the 901's. Called up Bose and McIntosh.

I picked up a second amp, the McIntosh 6100 integrated amp on ebay. I hooked up the 6100 by using RCA Y-splitters. The common went to the tape out of the 4100. One side of the Y went to the active equalizer, the other side to the tape in on the 6100.

I bought a pair of B&W 602 S3 speakers and hooked them up to the McIntosh 6100. The Bose and the B&W's, played individually, sound very different from each other. But with both sets of speakers playing, the sound is absolutely mind blowing!!! The direct/reflective nature of the 901's, combined with B&W's creates a depth and stage presence I've never heard before. Even when played at low volume.

My hunch paid off. The Bose need more direct to augment the reflective. The results were much greater than I anticipated.

Product Weakness: Need seperate amp in order to use conventional speakers with the 901's. Speaker placement.
Product Strengths: The whole room is the "sweet spot". Very good soundstage. Can handle obscene amouts of wattage.
