Re: Upside down Dynaudio Special 25's

Interesting. The Esotar tweeter is one of the best ever, but when I heard the Special 25, I was not impressed as much as I thought I would. There was a something about the sound of the midrange that was chesty or whooly that made them less musical than other, less expensive Dynaudio speakers. Perhaps you have found a way to improve the orientation of these speakers and overcome this anomaly.

I recommend using cinder blocks and/or bricks to determine the right height. Once you do, find a sturdy pair of stands that will position them at that height. Osiris made awesome 25" stands that might be good for you.

The other important consideration is how you couple the speakers to the strands. IMHO, there is no correct method; there are several, depending on the speakers, your system, and your room. You can use Fun-Tac or some other sticky substance to absorb the vibrations if you need to tame a bright or overly lively sound, or you can use audiopoints or some other cone to help drain the vibes away from your speakers if your system is not bright.

If the latter is the case, then I highly recommend you use three threaded audiopoints, and place the threaded inserts into the bottonm of your speakers. Then screw in the APs and your speakers will sing! If you have pets or children at home, I would also run bolts up through the bottom of your stand into two other threaded inserts in the bottom of your speakers. This will make them secure, and you will actually be able to tune your system by tightening or loosening these bolts.

The other option you have is the material you use to fill the stands. If the sound is overly lively or bright, a mixture of sand and lead shot works well. If your sound is not bright, I recommend a small to moderate amount of steel shot, depending on the weight of your empty stands.

Enjoy!
