Home Speaker Asylum

General speaker questions for audio and home theater.

Infinity classics RS3 some info.

Here is a link to some information on classic Infinity speakers, with some photos and technical specifications on the Infinity speaker models from the seventies and eighties. As far as a review goes, I don’t believe that any of the US audio magazines ever did an evaluation. The closest I could find, would be the reviews of the RS 1B and RS 4.5 in Stereophile back in volume VIII issues 4 and 7, and volume IV issues 5 and 6. Maybe one of the British mags reviewed them back in the eighties? You might check with a library that has a large periodicals collection, checking the 1981 to 1984 time frame. There’s really not a lot of information on the midline models as most of the attention was focused on the IRS and RS1B speakers at the time. For what its worth the opinions were that the early polypropylene woofer drivers retained some “plastic” sound colorations, betraying their cone material’s origin; this was mitigated by each successive generation of drivers. Today’s polypropylene drivers exhibit very little of this characteristic. As far as the sound of the EMIT high frequency drivers go they could be a little bright and brittle sometimes described as ruthlessly revealing. To their benefit the RS series were described as having a wide and deep soundstage. For best results, these speakers do need to be placed out from the walls and consideration given to some acoustic room treatment to mitigate any of their intrinsic brightness. Also experiment with the amount of toe-in and spacing required to maximize the best frequency balance while maintaining a satisfactory soundstage presentation. This of course is going to vary greatly from room to room. You might also wish to avoid any bright sounding components upstream. I do believe that some mention was made of the EMIT units having some problems in high humidity conditions, if that applies, then you may need a room dehumidifier. Best of luck with your system, sincerely cfb.
