The only listenable versions of songs like Hotel California & More Than A Feeling are by Moog Cookbook. There's nothing wrong with Led Zeppelin's version of Communication Breakdown, or Black Sabbath's version of Paranoid, but the Dickies versions rool.
I second the mention of Devo's cover of Satisfaction. The Stones never did a live version of it that I've heard that came close to the original, but their version is brilliant. Oh, and Nick Cave's version of Death Is Not The End is also a great call.
Dave Edmunds did a great job with Elvis Costello's Girls Talk; NRBQ's Me & The Boys; and Springsteen's From Small Things. The Ramones had a few, too--Let's Dance, Surfin' Bird, Do You Wanna Dance, Palisades Park, but those were great covers, perhaps not rising to the point of them 'owning' them. Joey's cover of What A Wonderful World is pretty good, too, but I don't think anyone's taking that away from Louis Armstrong just yet. Then there's Madeleine Peyroux, whose Leonard Cohen & Bob Dylan covers are pretty effin' good too.
James Brown--Night Train
Louis Prima--I Want You To Be My Baby
Chuck Berry--Route 66
The Animals--House Of The Rising Sun
Nirvana--Where Did You Sleep Last Night
