A lot of favorites I wouldn't say I 'miss' if their end came after it would seem they'd done their best work, with little chance they'd ever come close to topping it. In that sense I don't miss the Beatles, or the Ramones, or the Who, though I haven't heard the recent rec. I'd say the Replacements most of all, but if that band hadn't ended, how much different would they have been from Paul Westerberg's solo records?

Given that, I'd say the Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe partnership.

The one band that comes to mind that had been getting better & better with each record is the Minutemen. When it comes to acts that went out on top of their game, or reasonably close to it, I'd add Nirvana, Husker Du, the MC5, the English Beat...Jimi Hendrix. And it's tough to judge until you hear a new rec, but it's possible the Stooges might be as good as they ever were.
