Stolen Hoffner Beatle bass!

IT'S A FAKE!
A guitar touted as one Paul McCartney played in The Beatles was pulled from yesterday's Dick Clark memorabilia auction in New York. The autographed Hofner model, which had been displayed on Good Morning America, was removed from bidding after it was discovered the model was not made until 1978 -- eight years after the Fab Four split up.

Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey's Auction House, said in a statement, 'In as much as time does not permit us to properly investigate the matter, the [item] will be removed from the event. Depending on the outcome of our research, the bass guitar may be offered at a future date.'

Andy Babiuk, author of the book Beatles Gear, doubts whether the guitar ever belonged to McCartney. He told A-B-C News, 'Paul only really had two Hofners while he was with the Beatles. The first one was stolen in 1969, and the second one was the one he used primarily throughout the Beatles, and he still owns it to this day.'

There's been no word on how Clark obtained the disputed guitar -- whether it came through a third party or from McCartney directly.
