Gregg Rolie & Neal Schon once told moi they weren't crazy about the jazz-rock leanings Carlos undertook on "Caravan Serai", which is why they formed Journey(nowadays both take great pride in their contributions to that album). "If I hear one more timbali,..." Gregg lamented inside U.C. Davis' Freeborn Hall back in October '74. Tom Coster was an admirable keyboard replacement for Rolie in Santana, & they were a spirited live band until his departure in early '78. Santana vocalists included legendary Leon Thomas, Leon Patillo(a future Christian-rock headliner), & silky-smooth Gregg Walker during this period. Journey's management added then-unknown valley-ite Perry because Journey's commercial growth had stagnated with the "Next" album. Rolie's Journey replacement, ex-Babies keyboardist Jonathan Cain, helped pen the tunes which catapulted Journey into international phenoms. Randi Crawford does a spine-tingling version of "Whose Crying Now"! Read a Schon interview some time back where he was so pissed @ Perry, he decided to put the suckiest solo he could think of on "W.C.N.". That tactic apparently backfired, as he had plenty of string slingers later tell him that track inspired them to become axe wielders!
