Los Lobos at the Fillmore

Saw LL at the Fillmore last night. They have been playing two consecutive nights in early December there for about ten years now - an annual event. I've seen them about 15 times in the past 20 years, but this is only the fourth time to see them at the Fillmore - I really don't care for the venue and my wife (also an LL
fan) WON'T go there. Crowded, so-so sound at best (rock MUST be LOUD!) and NOWHERE to sit...

I'm nuts about "The Town and the City" (the recent LL release) and was hoping they'd play a few songs from it. Alas, they did that Friday night and played a completely different set last night (with "Hold On" and "Cuchio's Cumbia" from TTATC). The band was in top form- tight & and live-wire energetic yet freewheeling and fun. Quite a few of the tunes were on-the-spot choices and the set seemed geared towards their having a good old time. They were in "bar band from hell" mode, and when they play the Fillmore they really like to rock the house. They did and the audience, of course, had a great time and joined in for the ride.

Cougar Estrada shared drum duties with Victor Bisetti for a couple or so years and is now the sole LL drummer. AMAZING cat- chops, taste and soul and one of the best rock drummers I've ever heard. On some tunes he was playing standard rock time with his right hand (and feet) and "latin percussion" fills/lines with his left hand. There were moments you'd swear there were STILL two drummers playing... Always a joy to hear Conrad Lozano, one of the most solid and under-rated bass players around. Everybody sounded great and the marvelous Salvador Duran (who sang a couple tunes with excellent opening band Calexico) came out to sing lead on "Volver, Volver" in a fantastic audience sing along.

The sound was decent (for the Fillmore) and it was a most fun and enjoyable night with one the the greatest bands in existence and one that is a real national treasure..
