just saw NRPS do an outstanding +3 hour set at Vancouver's "The Yale" last night. absolutely incredible playing and showmanship from this highly underrated group of musicians. although only the amazing steel guitarist Buddy Cage and impressive lead guitarist (and now lead vocalist) David Nelson are from the original line up, the remaining rhythm section of Michael Falzarano (guitar/vocals), Ronnie Penque(bass/vocals) and Johnny Markowski (drums/vocals) proved that this line up is killer and does extreme justice to the songs of retired member John Dawson and the late Dave Torbert.in fact i will go so far as to say that for $25 it was easily blew away the recent Rolling Stones concert for musicianship alone (and hey the service charge for my Stones ticket was $21). in fact, the band did 2 Stones covers (Dead Flowers & Let It Bleed) which certainly did the Stones proud. it just proves that a small club show usually always leaves the music fan more satisfied than a humongous stage that looks like an office complex.
i took my mom to the show as she is a steel player herself. during the halfway mark of intermission she introduced herself to Buddy Cage and he invited her backstage for about 25 minutes to talk steel & stuff. how cool is that????!!!!
it was also good to see that there was a huge age range of people there. great to see young people in their 20's willing to carry the torch to keep alive the music of bands like this. (for those unfamiliar with NRPS they sound like a cross between the first 3 Eagles albums mixed with a heavy helping of the Grateful Dead. actually Jerry Garcia was the original steel guitarist for NRPS before he went on to create the Dead).
anyways, i'm probably rambling from the "high" (not that kind!) of the show and highly recommend anyone into country/rock to support and check out these true legends when they come to your town!
