These finally arrived from amazon and I have had a chance to play both a few times. What I am struck by overall is the high quality of the band.
Yes, there are some of the stylisations that lead to them being called Beatles copyists but they are marginal to the overall quality and would make a better basis for suggesting this was The Beatles recording under a false name!
But essentially its a few years down the line from The Beatles, more like their younger brothers.
In fact on Day After Day (from Straight Up) with its quite Slowhand -like vocals, by the time Harrison's slide joins Pete Ham, its closer to a blueprint for Layla than any Beatles track.
I have no idea how I missed out on Badfinger at the time, but I am happy to have these discs now and if you don't know them, especially with the blustering going on about the re-mixed Beatles Love album, you should really try to get a listen to this band who sound as good as The Beatles might if they hadn't become drowned in the tsunami of being The Fabs.
