some beans

Dave had an inherited heart condition which, not aided by what might be labelled a rock'n'roll lifestyle, resulted in him having a heart transplant at just 33.
After The Triffids he formed (actually during but that complicates things) The Black Eyed Susans (I will tell you about them later) and then The Red Ponies. While on tour promoting a solo album he was taken ill and put on a list for a transplant and had the operation in 95.
Back in Australia he studied at university and did some radio work but became unwell in a longterm sense.
He had to walk with a stick, gained weight and seemed bent over.
There seems a degree of depression involved... and here the story becomes murky.
There used to be a website which listed police reports and statements from witnesses some of which were in direct contradiction to each other.
David was hugely loved by his fans and the details of this are quite disturbing.
Either David took an overdose or was given one (that is where the murkiness becomes so black as to be inpenetratable) voluntarily or not.
I don't think I should really go further than that.
A former co-musician (not from The Triffids) was perhaps living in his house and has much to say on the matter, and others about him, but it has largely been swept away.
I spent an entire and I mean entire weekend reading through masses of stuff and continually found more footnotes and more leads and more blind alleys.
There is or was a drawing of David with a tube in his neck which was perhaps done during this time and which might be an indication of what happened to him.
All of this seems to have disappeared.
I hope I haven't hurt anyone who knew Dave, that was far from my intention.
Truth is rarely clean.
Try this site and read Graham Lee.s comment right near the end.

I will tell you more about The Triffids and their albums and also The Black Eyed Susans who have also made some great records, but let BSD sink in for a day or so first.
