The studio version of Rock Bottom from this era is excellent, but the LIVE (in the studio) version on the BBC album is jaw dropping; better than any of those listings.
Also, ...Crossroads (Cream/Clapton) should be much higher up (perhaps top of the list); the LIVE version of Little Wing by Hendrix should be higher up than All Along the Watch Tower (as should Voodoo Chile); Golden Earring's Twilight Zone should be on this list (doubters should see the import Rockpalast live to fully appreciate this solo); Humble Pie's version of I Don't Need No Doctor from the Fillmore concert with Peter Frampton on lead should be in the Top 20; Rush's Working Man & Spirit of Radio could also be in contention based upon Alex Lifeson's blistering solo work; Ted Nugent's Stormtroopin' and Snakeskin Cowboy both have awesome, memorable solo performances; Black Sabbath's War Pigs, Sweet Leaf or Iron Man with Tony Iomi's tight leads should be listed instead of Ozzy's solo stuff; then there's Blue Oyster Cult's Buck Dharma with solos from Don't Fear the Reaper, Burnin' For You, Buck's Boogie, etc., etc. This is just off the top of my head; I haven't even mentioned Peter Green's solos in Fleetwood Mac on Green Manaleshi and Oh, Well or several of Joe Walsh's solos from his James Gang work (BTW, we see the James Gang tomorrow! -grin); how about Steve Howe's solo work from Yes (yes/no/maybe)?
Unfortunately, this Numb poll (how appropo) is like most subjective lists based on polling listeners: it has much less to do with a qualitative assessment of the work than of a quantitative assessment based on what listeners have heard. That said, I won't argue the GENERAL assessment that these noted songs have great soloing, even though I differ strongly with the ranking and certain glaring omissions within the Top 20. I haven't seen the remaining 20, so I'll reserve final judgment, but I'll wager that some supurb groups I've mentioned (with numerous songs containing spectacular soloing) didn't even make the list.
