Australian accents seem, to me, after 7 years here, to be differently based than, say, British.
In Europe accents change with region, but, Australia being a "new" (sorry indigenous peoples!) country, basically speaks American TV English... T is pronounced D etc etc.
There is little to no home content on free to air TV.
The difference comes between urban and country ("bush" if you will).
There is a kind of Australian which (I may get hung for this) approximates the hillbilly in the Simpsons.
Its not unusual to hear little difference between the way Aussies speak especially from a distance.
You especially wouldn't be able to tell where someone was born and it is normal to just ask, whereas, in Britain there are experts who can place your birth within about 5 miles just by hearing you speak.
If you go back even one generation, Australia was a different place with the infamous 6.00 o/clock swill (pubs only open during the day) and what is now refered to as the cultural cringe.
I think this is all part of what makes this country such a good place to live.
It is rapidly becoming the epitome of a 21st century country simply because almost (and again apologies to the indigenous) everyone comes from elsewhere at least within one generation, and, not without problems, is a melting pot or east and west, even middle east.
The exception being African culture which, at least near here, seems lacking.
But you can see this everywhere but perhaps most notably in food where Australia may be the world originator of what seems to be called fusion.
Imagine an unholy alliance between Italian and Thai and you are not so far wide of the mark.
There is a new gold rush and its called sunshine!
As long as this drought ends one day then I don't think anything, not even our prime minister, can hold this country back.
