Emmylou Harris' voice, Mark Knopfler's guitar glisten and shimmer under the stars over Berkeley

Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris found a little piece of gold with "This Is Us." With its almost offhand list of images from the scrapbook of a happy marriage, it is one of those wonderful occasional songs in which people instantly see themselves. The song lay solidly at the center of their joint performance Friday at UC Berkeley's Greek Theatre, where the pair finished a tour behind the release of their new album, "All the Roadrunning."
The song not only speaks for all the couples that can identify with the sentiments, it's also emblematic of the two independent-minded and talented musicians behind it. Harris even seemed to echo the lyrics as she waxed nostalgic on the final night of their tour.
"This has been a highlight of a long and happy career," she told the near-capacity crowd, "that I hope will continue a little while longer."
At first glance, Knopfler, the stodgy British guitarsmith with the croaky voice, and the winsome, refulgent Harris might seem an unlikely couple. But they discovered some authentic musical chemistry that Knopfler brought to life under his scrupulous ministrations.
Harris, of course, gives the best harmony in the business and has been making everybody she sings with sound good since she started out with Gram Parsons 30 years ago. On her own, she may come off somewhat starchy, but next to Knopfler, she is practically the class clown.
Both these musicians followed their own musical paths -- Harris with conventional Nashville country music and Knopfler coming from the tight, bright new wave sound of his rock band, Dire Straits. Both have spent the last 20 years fashioning unique musical visions, and neither is a star or even much of a performer. They are musicians.
