It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Mahler Reviled - Mahler Superstar

I first listened to Mahler in 1973. I went through his entire symphonic canon in chronological order, amazed by the constant progress and metamorphosis.

For very personal reasons, I stopped listening to any Mahler at all for more than a decade.

During that time, Mahler went from being a little known, mostly dispised and reviled character to the nearest thing classical music has to a superstar. By the mid 70s, Mahler was everywhere. Bernstein and the 60s were largely responsible, although that's really a simplification. Tons of recordings, tons of concerts, lots of articles and bios. Russell even made a movie about him, ridiculous as might b eexpected.

Largely ignored for the first 50 years following his death, just as Mahler had predicted, his music crashed into the standart reportoire like a storm. Still, lots of people can't respond to the music.

Now, more than a quarter of a century after the hubbub, you finally discover Mahler. Better late than never, but should you find the music too much, there's always that "relax" thing for you to go back to. You know, Fleetwood Mac - the greatest music ever made.
