Thanks for the recommendation, Jonathan. I'll look for it. Let me suggest some other guys...they are not "unknown", but certainly under-appreciated. Booker T. And the MGs.The great "Memphis Sound" of artists like Otis Redding would not have been what it is without Booker T. Jones, Al Jackson, "Duck" Dunn, and of course, Steve Cropper. (Cropper and Dunn are also known as the main backup for the "Blues Bros.") Booker T. and the MGs were, aside from their own recordings, the "house band" for STAX records.
They did have some hits of their own ("Green Onions"), and many albums under their own name. And Booker T. went on to become a producer (the amazing sound on Willie Nelson's "Stardust" is largely due to the efforts of B.T. Jones...)
They are the standard by which "funk" is measured. Check them out.
