Morgan, I have to agree with you. Her songs often sound much the same. I saw her in concert, and had much the same reaction to her live show. There seems to be no real inspiration on the musical side of her songs; she is still a pretty good lyricist. Another musician I put in the same bracket is James Taylor. Like Joni, his best work was his early work; it's been a drone and a snooze since then.
