Karl Bohm / Vienna Philharmonic / DG 2530-831-833 (2-LP, 1977)In this recording we are treated not to the more commonly heard kapelmeister Bohm, but rather to the dramatic logician. Far more effective than Jochum (EMI), Bohm allows his climaxes to surge, achieving true fortes, producing a highly dramatic 1st movement. Bohm’s 1st mvmt stresses energy; less anger and mystery than Karajan (BPO, analog), less logic and inevitablitity that Haitink (digital), but far greater cohesion than Jochum, who’s fast tempi and general approach sound superficial.
The Scherzo is ideal. Strength, bouyancy, light and dark, are all captured with exquisite sureness. The best performance of this movement I’ve heard.
Bohm shapes every phrase with care in the 3rd mvmt introduction, and he devotes concentrated attention to dynamics, surpassing all others I’ve heard in these respects. Throughout the mvmt, Bohm’s concentration is acute, more so than even Karajan (tho not by a great margin). The only unwelcome element is the control room intrusions, which increase gain (especially on the strings), as if to underline the conductor’s intentions. Bohm’s 3rd mvmt is more profound than the hapless Jochum; he is on par with the finest accounts such as Karajan and Guilini.
Bohm’s opening of the 4th mvmt is far more effective than Jochum or Haitink, but nevertheless fails to convey the sense of ovewhelming force that Karajan acheives. From that point on, Bohm offers a performance of force and heightened dramatic contrast, exceeding Haitink and even Karajan in realizing the music’s propulisive impact. The movement unfolds with power and drama. Only in the coda does he falter slightly, allowing the brass to rise to triple forrte too soon, thus missing the overwhelming experience of a dynamically graduated coda so skillfully achieved by Karajan and especially Haitink.
The recorded sound is typical of analog DG of the era, but with greater immediacy and better timbre than the analog Karajan.
Overall, this is among the finest 8ths I’ve heard. Karajan is more tragic and spiritually accute, Haitink more symphonically logical and cleanly executed, and Jochum inferior on all counts.
