Severius, I've noticed that you tend towards harsh judgements and outspoken opinions, so you may appreciate my frankness ( then again, maybe not ).

That list just strikes me as BORING! Damn, freakin' BORING! Yeah, it's an impressive list of "classic" jazz. Yeah, it's very "PC" in jazz circles to cite classics from that era. Yeah, it reads like a "guide to essential 60's jazz" - but do you realize the jazz recordings that you've listed average over 40 years old, with the most recent (probably Miles Smiles) being 37 years old?
So what happened? The world stop turning in 1965, or did they just stop making jazz? Not a thing wrong with any of those recordings, a few of them are on my list of favorites as well, but it reads like a museum guide to jazz. That sound is dated, static, archival. Jazz should be, deserves to be, an ongoing, evolving, kinetic, vibrant art form. I'm in a minority here and among jazz cognizenti in general, but I'm much more excited by today's music and today's musicians, and I feel we have to support current jazz in order to foster its future growth. Brecker, Marsalis (take your pick), Harrell, Lovano, Douglas, Turre are among my favorites - or any number of the less well known independent label artists who are deservedly talked up here... many of the Criss Cross artists deserve recognition, for example. I could easily give you the names of over 100 contemporary jazz artists who would deserve at least a portion of the rotations in our CDPs.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest (again).

Anyway:

Yesterday morning I was in the mood for some classical latin piano - Started off with Chucho Valdes' new release, Fantasia Cubana: Variations on Classical Themes. Just brilliant! I stayed somewhat in that same flavor for a while with Michel Camillo's Triangulo before switching Michels to Michel Petrucciani's Solo Live. More brilliance! I had Leonard Cohen lyrics stuck in my head (Hallelujah) so I exorcised them by playing Cohen Live and The Future before settling in to watch the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS get even. An anomalie of non-jazz listening!

Cheers,
Mike
