Douglas Allanbrook on Mapleshade CD - I think that...

...I like a lot about these stately works. Heather Craw singing on "Songs of Love and death" is really quite the bird, sort of in the red-breasted tradition. The style is a bit two-dimensional, maybe. Ramparts of frozen passion! But, this mysteriously attractive "frozen" quality grows on one with time. I get a similar feeling listening to this CD that I do when I view certain late-medieval manuscript illustrations - a startling etched quality that really fits the mood of the subject matter here. The close-miked style of recording definitely brings you up close and personal as this mezzo-soprano lets loose with something pretty bewitching, I think. "The Majesty of the Horn" CD is another revelation of "plainness and clarity", in many ways. Again, something very nice is going on here in a clean but not too cold way. I never knew a french horn could sound so immediate and Douglas allanbrook's piano work contrasts very nicely. I'm still a little unsure about the "Ethan Frome" lyric opera CD at this time. But, fantastic recording quality once again. And there is invoked this thick, leaden domestic atmosphere that is strangely absorbing. How much urban regretfulness Douglas Allanbrook manages to cram into this musty little environment, where "the worm never dies." Overall, I think I like this trio of CD's - it is to be recommended. Any thoughts from anyone here?
