My wife and I had dinner with Gerry's widow, a friend of ours for quite a while whom we tend to see a bit more of around the holidays. This was the first time she insisted (I'm not using her first name by design) that we come "to the house" and man, I am simply in awe.
EVERYTHING in the home studio is as it was the day he died. Some dusting has gone on, but the papers, notes, reeds are still there as if he's going to walk in any minute (don't panic; the original, handwritten charts are already under lock n' key at the Library of Congress).
Swear to God, there is even a Post-It note above the phone: "Dave Brubeck called 4:40PM".
I started laughing out loud when I saw that. And Mrs. Mulligan understood so well, she laughed, too.
There were casually tacked-up "fan" notes from regular folk like then President Clinton, there was Gerry's collection of odd-sized and antique saxes and, everywhere, his clear vote for Best Loudspeaker; Tannoy. In his living room, in his studio, all Tannoy. Polk, however, for nearfield use (while composing).
There you go.
