Recently I bought a new Compaq laptop with DVD drive and CRW.
With this combo I cannot tell the difference between the original and the copy, even burning at 16X the speed.
Before that I had a PC with a no name brand CD drive and a HP CD burner and I found a slight loss of "air"
I think that Compaq use Toshiba DVD and CDRW and the result is just great, takes less than 5 min to burn a CD.
Cannot hear any benefit when recording at lower speed.
As far as media is concerned I use Traxdata or Sony.
TDk is cheap but I made a few toasters so rather pay a little more.
The beauty of CD burners is that one can make great compilation for the car, or dinner party.
I am busy doing some for New Years Eve bash.
