It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Classical Recording Guides - Any Recommendations?

There are none, IMO. I can't claim to be a very knowledgeable listener in either regard, but I can say that both the Penguin and Rough Guides contain appraisals that seem to me way off base in terms of both sound and performance. In fact, both more or less amount to "brand name" guides (ie, the "reference recording" for virtually every major piece winds up being Karajan/BPO or some other equally big name, and they rarely criticize the sonics of big companies like DG, even when it's clearly warranted). In terms of recommendations, the only thing you can do is read a wide variety of critics and get to know their individual preferences/prejudices.
