A story that might interest you. I recently acquired (via Ebay) a couple of open reel tapes of a Bud Powell trio recording of "Portrait of Thelonious." According to Wikipedia, this was originally recorded in 1961 in a Paris Studio. Bud's sidemen were Kenny Clarke on drums and Pierre Michelot on bass.
For some reason this performance was subsequently (1965) released by Columbia as a live performance, complete with fake audience applause. What I have are two 15 ips 2-track tapes ostensibly from Columbia Recording Studios, dated 12/14/64, produced by Teo Macero (!), marked "SPIRAL IN APPLAUSE." It would appear that the only "production" involved adding the fake applause before and after the eight music tracks on the original tapes.
As a further curiosity, the Ebay seller was Russian. The tapes themselves, complete with test tones (one tape per LP side) are, for Bud Powell recordings, really great sounding. Only four of the eight tunes are by Thelonious.
