Of the major figures from the early days of bop, it seems to me that Powell is the least mentioned and discussed, even though his influence on pianists was broad and deep. (Unfortunately many of these players missed Bud's coverage of the entire keyboard, so we ended up with many whose limited use of the left hand was in my view a detriment.)
Too often what we see and hear about him are the tragic circumstances of his mental illness and not enough about the music. If he had never done anything other than "The Amazing Bud Powell Volumes I & II", he would still be a major jazz figure.
