I was in the hall for three performances recorded for video: this Mahler/Boulez concert, some of the Brahms cycle that is out on BD now (great recording of the violin concerto with Julia Fischer), and the Bruckner 8.
I don't know how they managed to keep the camera boom out of the video. In all three concerts, there was a massive teeter-totter-like, counterweighted boom that took up several rows of orchestra seats right in front of the violins. It wasn't a robot--there was a guy operating it. The camera would move over the stage--didn't seem to distract the players--and then back some distance. It was a little distracting to me as an audience member.
