Regarding your warning to people who might be turned off by books:Personally-speaking, sound always came before the "symbol" for me. In other words: music came first, books later. If it were the other way around, it's likely that this listener would be a confused mess. (Program notes scanned before a symphony notwithstanding.)
I can't imagine any prospective music lover avoiding composer X because author Y told them to.
Can you name some of these 20th C books, that are so dangerous for the general reader?
