Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Alcohol

I've long ago lost any interest in consumption of alcohol. I just have no interest to do to my body what alcohol in excess does. I also deplore the false idea that excessive alcohol consumption somehow constitutes a heroic act. Joining the armed forces to defend your country, or running into a burning building to save a life - those constitute heroism. Getting drunk? Nope.

That said, I don't avoid alcohol completely. Used as an adjunct to food, it enhances a meal. And, I think the medical evidence shows a beneficial effect in tiny quantities. Thus, a small glass of wine with a weekend dinner, or a glass of quality beer [quality - to make it worth your while] on a summer weekend after dinner, complete the meal.

We've just gotten thru our summer of 2015. In July at a Sunday party in a backyard, the sun was out and the temperature was just warm enough, without for a change, Chicago humidity. Conviviality reigned, so I decided to sample a glass of the fresh micro brew that my friend had generously bought. It was quite delicious. I was wrapped up in conversation, carried away on the wave of a lively exchange of ideas, and I somehow drank a second glass.

It's so sneaky. I haven't consumed 2 glasses of beer - or any alcohol - in decades. Here I was, going for a third. By about the third of the way thru that third glass of micro brew, the effect began to make itself known. The feeling of warmth; the slight but noticeable pleasant feeling of euphoria spread thru me.

What happened next is why I'm relating the story here and wasting your time.

I've noticed that as people become intoxicated, a familiar pattern emerges. Some people become combative and/or violent. Some become talkative and sociable. Many lose fears and inhibitions. Libido takes hold.

As the euphoria pleasantly filled my consciousness, I found myself overcome by a desire-----for music. Music. Not fighting. Not talking. Not jumping or dancing or intimacy. Music. Hearing music. That's all wanted. And, I really, really wanted it.

Curious.

And, the impulse grew. It grew in intensity. It grew so much that I found myself backing away from the group that I was talking with and finding some corner. - just so I could recreate some music in my mind. I just had to hear the Schubert Death and the Maiden quartet. I just had to hear some chamber music. I was seriously considering leaving the party.

I began to hum the Schubert music, until one of the wives shouted "Hey - you OK over there?"

Well, I returned to the group. Of course, I wasn't going to consume the rest of the third glass of beer - this was already quite enough. Eventually, the effect dissipated. But, I was left with a new view of facet of the possibilities of the human brain that I hadn't quite experienced before. This is your brain on music.

Any one else have any similar close encounters?
